INFORMATION

Illario is the younger of the two surviving Dellamorte heirs, brought up by their grandmother Caterina Dellamorte, First Talon of the Antivan Crows. The Crows are the most feared and respected guild of assassins in Thedas, and the First Talon is the head of the council.

Having been orphaned during a bid by another Crow family to force Caterina to step down, you'd think that Illario and his cousin Lucanis would have been treated as precious things, loved and spoiled and kept safe. This is not what happened. As soon as they were in her care, the boys were taught to survive - often caned, starved and left without water for days, and expected to patch each other up as needed. They were also taught to fight, to sneak into buildings, and to kill.

All of this left Illario and Lucanis closely bonded, but they both reacted differently to Caterina. Lucanis believed that she had taught them what they needed to survive as Crows, while Illario hated her for the pain that she had put them both through. As they grew older, it became clear that sensible, quiet Lucanis was their grandmother's favourite and Illario was anything but.

Illario remained close to his cousin and sure that Lucanis was the only person who could be trusted. It became Illario's wish to become First Talon, something he expresses to his cousin, and Lucanis confirms Illario would be the better man for the job. However, after a difficult assassination, they complete together, the "Wigmaker Job", Lucanis reveals that he would take it if Caterina offered him the role of First Talon. Illario considers this a betrayal, and along with the belittling comments Lucanis begins to make about Illario, their relationship begins to crumble.

Not long after the "Wigmaker Job", Illario seduces a blood mage and Venatori, Zara Renata, and betrays Lucanis. He believes Zara will just have his cousin killed, but instead, she imprisons Lucanis and has him tortured for over a year. During that time, Illario does truly mourn his cousin, but even with Lucanis dead, Caterina does not announce that Illario will be her heir. Once Lucanis is freed from his imprisonment, Illario is left scrabbling to secure his position. Not knowing what else to do, he uses blood magic to kidnap Caterina and imprison her, faking her death.

Keen to have revenge on Zara, Lucanis begins to investigate. He discovers where Zara is hiding, and takes Rook there to fight her. Illario shows up, but is sent away because Lucanis believes he isn't good enough to fight Zara. At the very end of the battle, Illario jumps down from the ceiling, snaps Zara's neck before she can betray him, and then uses blood magic on Lucanis to stop the demon inside him from killing him in a fit of rage. Suspicious of Illario, but not ready to act on it, Rook and Lucanis leave.

Unfortunately, the other Crows find out that Illario is the one who betrayed Lucanis, and has been working with the Venatori. At a showdown in their family home, Lucanis and Rook defeat Illario and the Venatori in a fight- at this point, Lucanis decides to either forgive his cousin or imprison him, depending on the world state.

HEADCANONS

Specialisation: At some point around his 16th birthday, Illario's training became specialised. Handsome and naturally charming, it was decided that he would be taught seduction. Illario got no say in this but was shipped off to spend time with one of Antiva City's best prostitutes, only returning months later with a completely different view of the world than the one he'd had before.

Obsession with Lucanis: Illario has something of an obsession with his cousin. Growing up as they did, Lucanis was the only soul Illario had any faith in, and he very much trauma bonded to him. They were more like brothers than cousins, and even before the massacre of their parents and siblings, they were close. As they got older, his feelings towards Lucanis became more sexual in nature, and as teenagers, there might have been some fooling around that never went anywhere.

Zara Renata: Illario never loved Zara, never felt anything particularly towards her. She was a means to an end, a way for him to become First Talon. Killing her was not difficult, and he doesn't regret it. She used and manipulated him just as he used and manipulated her, and in the end, he got to her before she could kill him.

Blood Magic: Illario's ability to use blood magic is actually from the charmed Crow pin he wears. He has to use his own blood in order to make it work, and it isn't as extensive or as powerful as the sort of blood magic a true mage can wield. It works better on those he shares blood with, namely Caterina and Lucanis, but that is as far as it goes.

Make-up Artistry: Illario uses make-up not only as part of his work but as something he personally enjoys. He is very proud of his good looks, using make-up to accentuate his features, but also using it as a way of disguising himself too, using contour and highlighter for example to change the appearance of his face.

Fashion: Illario is also a keen follower of fashion, to a degree. Never one to consider what Orlesians wear as real fashion, he focuses on what looks good on him, using the styles, cuts, fabrics and colours of the season to his advantage.

Illario is still watched carefully, not exactly trusted yet.
Lucanis and he are working on their relationship and trying to mend bridges IF Lucanis acknowledges Caterina's faults and the issues with their upbringing.
He fears that despite Lucanis' forgiveness, Caterina will have him killed in order to protect Lucanis, and as punishment for his betrayal. He's waiting for the other shoe to drop.
